Doja Cat & SZA Capture the First GRAMMY Wins of Their Careers

Published: Sunday 3rd Apr 2022 by Rashad

Barely a week after making headlines for announcing her intent to quit music all together, Doja Cat collects the first GRAMMY of her short but storied career.

Details inside:

Thanks to the ongoing success of her third studio album ‘Planet Her’ – one of 2021’s top-selling music projects –  Cat entered the 64th annual GRAMMYs on Sunday (April 3) tied with R&B singer H.E.R. as the night’s most nominated women (8 each).

Among those nods was Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, for which Doja’s SZA-assisted ‘Kiss Me More’ defeated the likes of Justin Bieber & Benny Blanco (‘Lonely‘), Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga (‘I Get a Kick Out of You’), BTS (‘Butter’), and Coldplay (‘Higher Power’) to claim the trophy.  They make history as the second all-female collaboration to collect the category’s golden gramophone (following the 2021 win of Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande).

Handed out during the GRAMMY’s main ceremony, the rapstress was expected to up that count by the night’s end as she’s listed in three of the ceremony’s four major categories: Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year.  However, she lost to Silk Sonic in both Record and Song of the Year categories and later to Jon Batiste in Album of the Year competition.

For SZA, the win comes after a heavily criticized relationship with the Recording Academy.

Despite entering the 2018 GRAMMYs as one of its highest nominated acts, she left the show empty-handed.  In the years since, she secured 9 other nominations but Sunday’s win remains her only victory (as of time reported).

She’ll never win a RAP award 🤣😂 Doja is just a thin, brown version of Meghan Trainor.

They gave Doja all the time she wanted on stage, even let her stand in awkward silence before pretending to cry with not a single tear, but Jazmine’s speech got cut short in half the time. Give everyone the same respect.
